Choose a fitness equipment shot blasting machine

The fitness equipment industry has extremely high requirements for surface treatment. It is necessary to achieve excellent cleanliness and roughness to ensure the adhesion of the coating, and at the same time handle workpieces of various shapes and sizes without damaging the precision and strength of the workpieces themselves.

For shot blasting cleaning of fitness equipment, belt-type shot blasting machines and hook-type shot blasting machines are the two most important and suitable choices. Which one to choose specifically depends on your product type, production scale and process requirements.

A. Crawler type shot blasting machine - suitable for small-sized and batch standard parts

Applicable workpieces

Small standard parts: such as dumbbell plates, barbell buckles, small connecting parts, handles, screws and nuts, etc.

Impact-resistant castings: Some cast iron bases or counterweights.

Batch processing: Suitable for mixed batch processing of small parts of the same or similar sizes.

Working principle: The workpiece is placed in a rotating belt. As the belt rolls, the shot blasting machine throws steel shots from multiple angles above, achieving comprehensive cleaning without any blind spots.

Advantages of the fitness equipment shot blasting machine

Excellent cleaning effect: During the shot blasting process, the workpiece keeps rolling, and all surfaces can be fully treated, with high uniformity.

High degree of automation: Convenient for loading and unloading materials, capable of continuous operation, with high production efficiency, suitable for large-scale production.

High space utilization: The equipment occupies a relatively small area.

Lower cost: The equipment investment and operating costs are usually lower than those of the hook type.

Disadvantage

Not suitable for complex and precision parts: Collisions may occur between workpieces and between workpieces and tracks, which may cause damage to precision threads, finely machined surfaces or fragile components.

The single processing size is limited: Due to the volume limitation of the drum, large frames cannot be processed.

B. Hook-type shot blasting machine - suitable for medium-sized, structural components and welded parts

Applicable workpieces

The core structural components of fitness equipment: This is the most commonly used and recommended type.

Welded frames: such as treadmill frames, elliptical machine main frames, Smith machine columns, single and double bars, etc.

Large and medium-sized sheet metal parts: Components that have been welded or stamped.

Workpieces that need to avoid collision: The hanging method is gentle. The workpieces rotate within the ejection area but do not collide with each other.

Working principle: The workpiece is suspended on a dedicated hook and enters the shot blasting cleaning chamber through a track. Indoors, the hook drives the workpiece to rotate at a constant speed, and the shot blasting machine projectiles from multiple fixed directions (usually 2 to 4) to remove the oxide scale, welding slag and burrs on the surface.

Advantages of the fitness equipment shot blasting machine

Workpiece protection: Hanging treatment, no mechanical collision, very suitable for welded structural components with threaded holes, finely machined surfaces or relatively fragile ones.

Flexible size handling: By customizing the hook and chamber size, it can handle frames ranging from medium and small to large (such as large comprehensive training frames).

Strong targeted cleaning: The hook speed and shot blasting Angle can be adjusted according to the shape of the workpiece to ensure that both the inner and outer surfaces of complex structures can be covered.

Strong versatility: It is an industry standard equipment for processing structural components and welded parts.

Disadvantage

Relatively low efficiency: Manual labor or auxiliary mechanical hangers are required, and the single cycle time is longer than that of the crawler type.

Large floor space: Space needs to be reserved for the hook's traveling track.

Higher investment and energy consumption: The complexity and price of the equipment are usually higher than those of the tracked type.

Selection of steel shot/sand for fitness equipment shot blasting machines:

Material: Usually, high-hardness and wear-resistant cast steel shot is selected. For surfaces with particularly fine requirements (such as high-grade coating), stainless steel shot can be selected.

Particle size: Commonly used ones are S330 (0.8mm) or S550 (1.4mm). Coarser particle size has strong cleaning ability but large roughness. Finer particle size results in a smoother surface. It is recommended to determine after conducting a sample test.

Shape: Round shot (steel shot) produces a more uniform roughness; Angular sand (wire cut shot) has a stronger cleaning ability, but it also wears out equipment more quickly.

Shot blasting intensity and time

Most fitness equipment is made of Q235 or Q345 steel, which has moderate strength. Shot blasting intensity (Almen test piece) reaching 0.15-0.25 mmA (C standard) can effectively clean and form an appropriate anchor pattern depth.

The time should be sufficient to remove all the oxide scale and slag, but it should not be too long to cause excessive cold work hardening or roughness on the surface.

Dust removal system: It is necessary to be equipped with an efficient cartridge dust collector to ensure a clean working environment and recover reusable abrasives.

Summary and final suggestions

If you mainly produce small accessories such as dumbbells and barbell plates, choose a belt-type shot blasting machine, which is economical and efficient.

If you mainly produce the frames and structural components of various fitness equipment (which is the situation for most manufacturers), the hook-type shot blasting machine is your first choice. It is the most reliable and professional option. It can not only protect the workpiece, but also process multiple components at one time through customized lifting gear, improving efficiency.

If both are available and the output is large, a hook-type shot blasting machine can be considered as the main option. For small parts, special baskets or hoppers can be made and processed on the hook. Or, if conditions permit, configure two devices.

Before making a final decision, contact 2-3 reputable shot blasting machine equipment manufacturers and provide them with your typical workpiece samples (preferably with slag and oxide scale) for free testing. The test report will visually present the cleaning effect, time, roughness and equipment configuration suggestions, which is the most reliable basis for making the right investment decision.
